The First Republic of Armenia was established on May 28, 1918, by the declaration of Independence by the Armenian National Council. It was the first Armenian state after centuries of loss of the Armenian Statehood since the Middle Ages. It included eastern Armenia occupying 70000 square Kilometre area and a population of 1.3 Million people. Leaders of the republic were mostly from the Armenian Revolutionary Federation. The First Republic fell two years later in 1920 and became a part of Soviet Union. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the republic regained its independence as the current Republic of Armenia in 1991.
